NCTE and Gantner Instruments cooperate for contactless E-Motor Testing

Munich/Oberhaching, September 16, 2021: NCTE and Gantner Instruments have cooperated to develop a measurement technology solution for non-contact e-motor testing in real time that uses proven standard components (COTS – components of the shelf).

At the test station for electric motors, the solution provides measurement data for electrical and mechanical variables. These are voltage and current at the DC motor as well as torque and speed. If required, the measurement data can be extended at any time with physical variables such as temperature, vibration or strain. Hardware and software from Gantner Instruments records the measurement data and visualizes the test bench. The decisive process variables torque and speed are measured by a sensor from NCTE. The advantages of the NCTE sensor: It measures speed and torque without contact, which eliminates the input of disturbance variables by mechanical parts – as is the case with conventional sensors.

Torque and speed at a test station for electric motors

A test setup consists of an electric motor which is loaded by a hydraulic brake. The shaft connecting the motor and brake is fitted with the NCTE sensor. The non-contact sensor detects the change in the magnetic field and converts it into an analog signal for speed and torque.

The braking force is adjusted via an electrohydraulic disc brake using a dashboard. If the braking force is increased, the speed decreases. In response, a higher motor current is established, which increases the power of the DC motor and brings the actual speed closer to the target speed again.

Faster development with COTS components

When companies develop test benches for innovative products such as electric motors, the time from design to finished test system must be as short as possible. Off-the-shelf COTS elements made from standard components can be produced and installed much faster. The metrology solution is ready for immediate use without any adjustments and can be easily integrated into the engine test bench. With the COTS solutions, users also save costs compared to proprietary systems in the initial investment and throughout the entire life cycle.

About NCTE AG

NCTE is a specialist in non-contact sensor technology using the principle of elastic magnetostriction. The medium-sized company employs 40 people at its site in Oberhaching near Munich. NCTE develops, produces and sells sensor solutions that measure mechanical forces (torque, force, shear, speed or bending) in a completely non-contact manner – as standard sensors and customer-specific solutions, both in individual production and for series production. Customers include Mercedes, Red Bull Racing Team, Schaeffler and Trumpf.
