Non-contact torque sensor for precise measurements down to 0.5 Nm

Munich/Oberhaching, October 21, 2021: NCTE expands the 2300 series with a non-contact torque sensor based on magnetostriction for applications with extremely low torques. The series precisely measures dynamic and static torques from 100 to 0.5 Nm for bandwidths up to 1,000 Hz. Accuracy is 0.5% for speeds up to 10,000 rpm.

The sensitive low-torque sensors are used, for example, to control machine tools, to measure the efficiency in electric motors over a long period of time, or to detect load peaks and vibrations in a test setup.

Magnetic measurement for long and reliable service life

For its torque sensors, NCTE uses the principle of magnetostriction. In a patented process, the shaft is magnetically encoded so that the sensors measure mechanical forces accurately and without contact. This magnetic coding is long-term stable (remanent). A separate discrete primary sensor is not necessary. To ensure that the technology works even when there are influences from external magnetic fields such as EMC interference, two magnetic fields are always generated in opposite magnetic orientation. The NCTE solution works with very low field strengths, the component itself does not become a magnet.

Due to the non-contact measurement, no maintenance is required. Data is acquired in real time, resulting in high noise immunity. The robust sensors function reliably even in the presence of strong vibrations, under water or in an oil bath. The operating temperature ranges from -30 °C to +85 °C.

The analog outputs 0-10 V as well as 4-20 mA, CAN bus or USB are available as signal outputs for the 2300 series. No external measuring amplifier is necessary (Plug & Play). Each sensor has a protection class of at least IP50. The series is “Made in Germany” as a ready-to-connect unit including 5 m cable and calibration certificate available from stock.

About NCTE AG

NCTE is a specialist in non-contact sensor technology using the principle of elastic magnetostriction. The medium-sized company employs 40 people at its site in Oberhaching near Munich. NCTE develops, produces and sells sensor solutions that measure mechanical forces (torque, force, shear, speed or bending) in a completely non-contact manner – as standard sensors and customer-specific solutions, both in individual production and for series production. Customers include Mercedes, Red Bull Racing Team, Schaeffler and Trumpf.
